Wayne County Remembers The Civil War
February 1st – April 22nd, 2009
Honoring Abraham Lincoln
The first exhibit of the 2009 season at the Wayne County Historical Society will commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the birthday of Abraham
Lincoln, 16th president of the
United States and give visitors a
glimpse of life for both soldiers and
their families back in Wayne County.
“You will not want to miss this
display and series of programs,” said
Gerry Payn, chairman of the planning
committee. “Our last Civil War Display
was ten years ago in 1999. With
Mr. Lincoln’s 200th birthday in 2009,
we felt that this is the time for another
exhibit.”

Harry McClarran, a Civil War
Veteran, the display will open on
Sunday, Feb. 1 and continue through
Sunday, Apr. 26 A highlight of the program on
Sunday, Feb. 1, will be a visit with
Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by
Gerry Payn at 1:30 p.m. in the School
House. Lincoln will discuss his trials
and tribulations during his presidency.
He will be joined by Mary Todd
Lincoln (presented by Mary Kerr)
speaking on her life as a widow after
Mr. Lincoln’s death.On Sunday, Mar. 1, Jeff Musselman
and Jason Anderson will
present a program at1:30 p.m. in the
School House. They will be speaking
on Wayne County’s involvement
in the Civil War.
The exhibit wraps up with a Civil
War Encampment on Saturday, April
25 and Sunday 26, on the Society
grounds by members of the 41st OVI,
under the direction of Capt. Ron Rechnitzer
and members of the 4th OVI under
the direction of Lt. Dennis Brinker.
In case the weather does not
permit an encampment; this is Ohio
remember, the units will present
demonstrations and a program on
Sunday, April 26, beginning at 1:30
p.m. in the School House.The ladies working with the Society’s
textile collection will have a
display of Civil War Era Clothing and
other items in the Dress Shop.
The program and exhibit is free
for society members and $5 for nonmembers.

program will be one of the best and
you don’t want to miss a single performance.
Ray Leisey, originator
and chair of the program has secured
four great programs for the series.

JANUARY 18, 2009 2:00 PM:
UP RIVER MUSIC will perform a
varied program of Celtic and old
time music for your enjoyment. Up
River will weave stories of legends
and lore with tales of the music
and the people who have carried it
across the ocean into the Appalachians
and to you.
FEBRUARY 22, 2009 2:00 PM:
PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON
will grace us with his presence.
One of our truly great Presidents,
Jefferson will travel to Wooster from
his home in Monticello to discuss
his time as President, the Revolution
and explain how so many of his
decisionsve led this country to its
prominence on the world stage.
MARCH 22, 2009 2:00 PM:
STEVE FREE, an internationally
known and award winning singer/
songwriter and recording artist will
draw upon his Native American
Heritage and American folk/country
heritage to entertain us. Steve has
charted 11 songs on Billboard, recorded
a platinum record, and has
received many ASCAP awards.
APRIL 19, 2009 2:00 PM: THE
LOCAL GIRLS, our most popular
group ever, will return after an absence
with an all new program of
old and new pop music. Their tight
harmonies backed by their fabulous
band will be the highlight of the
year.
